Why VINs matter for fleets

Fleet records rot: trackers get swapped between trucks, spreadsheets fall behind, and a year later nobody is sure which unit is in which vehicle. The VIN is the fix — it’s burned into the vehicle and readable electronically through the OBD port.

That’s why Always ON Tracking reads the VIN automatically from every vehicle: assets identify themselves, make/model/ year fill in on their own, and if a tracker ever moves to a different vehicle, the platform notices the VIN change.

VIN questions, answered

The most common spots: the driver-side dashboard visible through the windshield, the driver-door jamb sticker, your ownership/registration papers, and your insurance documents. On trucks and equipment it may also be stamped on the frame.

Positions 1–3 identify the country and manufacturer, positions 4–8 describe the vehicle (model, body, engine), position 9 is a check digit, position 10 is the model year, position 11 is the assembly plant, and positions 12–17 are the unique serial number. VINs never use the letters I, O, or Q to avoid confusion with 1 and 0.

No — this decoder tells you what the vehicle IS (make, model, year, engine, plant), from the public NHTSA database. Accident and lien history are separate paid services (e.g. CARFAX Canada).
